Fan filter units are engines behind a cleanroom system, and consist of a HEPA filter and a fan unit. The fan inhales air from the top of FFU and passes it through the primary and HEPA filter. The filtered clean air is sent out uniformly at a wind speed of 0.45 m/s on the whole air outlet surface. FFU widely used in areas of electronics, food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and medical instruments etc.

Zonsteel fan filter units can meet clean room standard ISO4 to ISO8, equal to class 10 to 100,000. Model could be H13 and H14. The cleanliness of the air is measured by the amount of microscopic particles present in per cubic meter in the cleanroom. Air purification standards cover temperature, relative humidity, air pressure, air velocity, and, most importantly, the cleanliness of the air in a production environment. What Is a Fan Filter Unit?

Fan Filter Unit

Figure: 1 Fan Filter Unit

A fan filter unit (FFU) is a combination of a fan and a high-efficiency filter (HEPA) or an Ultra-High Efficiency Filter (ULPA) to form a purification equipment with its own power.

FFU could work with ceiling grid, a cooling coil, pressurized fan, MAU and clean room LED light as a system. Or independently use for clean table, clean cabinet, sampling booth, pass box, weighing room and laminar flow hood, or for modular clean room, clean production line or a particular place cleanliness grade 100.

What Are the Advantages of a Fan Filter Unit (FFU)?

Fan Filter Unit FFU

Figure 2: Fan Filter Unit FFU

–       Flexible and Adjustable System

The clean room ceiling is in the form of modules, usually with size 600x1200mm, or 600x600mm, working with modular ceiling grid. Ceiling LED light, steel board also fit for the ceiling grid size. So you can easy change location of fan filter unit, light or ceiling board to achieve new layout for the clean room. Also you can regulate clean room cleanliness through increasing or reducing quantities of FFU. This is almost impossible for a purification system with a centralized air supply.

–       The Air Output Is Even >a>nd Stable

One thing that works for many people should be that the air output is even and stable. This is because the system comes with its own fan. You now do not have to deal with the problem of unbalanced air volume just as you would with a centralized air supply system. As such, it can be a better option for implementing a unidirectional flow of air in clean rooms.

–       Significant Energy Saving

Air ducts tend to quickly increase the cost of setting up other types of purification systems like centralized air supply system. While the fan filter units system uses fewer ducts, cause its use ducts sending fresh air only, return air is running like a small loop which is not require ducts.

Also, having a high-efficiency motor helps a lot in improving the circulation. As such, not much air duct is required to move the air. As a result, you will save a lot of money during the initial set up process.

–       Space >S>aving

As we had explained above that you no longer have to include many air ducts, we can easily see that you would end up saving more on space.

Another advantage would be that the fan filter unit will not need much time to set up. With the construction period shortened, it should be easy for you to get back to using the clean room.

–       Setting Up Additional Components Is Easier

FFU units be reasonably laid out and work with lights, smoke detectors, sprinkler and electrostatic neutralizer. That might be an issue if you are using the centralized air supply. However, the fan filter unit makes it easier for you to set up more components to ensure that the clean room has everything it needs. No more worries about device conflicts.

–       The Fan Filter Unit Offers a Negative Pressure Seal

The setup of the fan filter unit air supply system ensures there is a negative pressure seal. This means in case any leakage of fan filter unit, it will still leak into the static pressure box from the clean room. As such, you will end up with a noncontaminated clean room all the time.

In Which Environment Is a Fan Filter Unit Likely to Be Used?

Fan Filter Unit Manufacturer

Figure 3: Fan Filter Unit Manufacturer

For the fan filter unit to work correctly, we have to consider the following conditions;

–       The temperature needs to be between 5℃to 40℃.

–       The relative humidity should not be more than 90% at 40 degrees Celsius

–       The atmospheric pressure is supposed to be between 86kPa to 106 kPa

–       The maximum dust concentration for the unit to work correctly should be at ISO8 i.e. <3500 grains/L@≤5μm.

–       The power source rating for the unit can be 110V, 220V, 270V, 380V, and 480V at a frequency of 50Hz or 60Hz.

What Are the Overall Structural Characteristics of Fan Filter Unit?

To help you understand more about the overall look of the fan filter unit, below are diagrams with all the details.

Figure 4 Fan Filter Unit Structure

Zonsteel uses high quality components such as the high-efficiency filter or the ultra-high efficiency filter (ULPA) to make the filtration process better. To complete the structure, you also find it having a mini fan, an outer box, and much more.

You will notice that it comes with a specially designed internal air duct to make the air flow uniform and further reduce its operating noise.

What Are the Components of a Fan Filter Unit?

Fan Filter Unit Component

Figure 5: Fan Filter Unit Component

Below are some of the building components of a fan filter unit to help you understand what the system is all about.

–       The Primary Filter

This filter’s main purpose is to prevent any damage to the HEPA filter setup in the fan filter unit. It does this by removing most of the debris that might arise during the construction or maintenance time of a clean room. With such protection, it is expected that the HEPA filter will now last for longer.

–       The Shell

The shell is what houses the other components of the fan filter unit. It is easy to see why such a component is supposed to be tough and durable. Depending on the manufacturer, the shell can be made of steel plate, aluminum, aluminum alloy, stainless steel, or hard plastic. You can still find other materials being used. It all depends on the user specifications and needs.

–       The Air Duct Connection Parts

There are times when the setup of a fan filter unit does not need a very high level of cleanliness. At this point, we are talking of <1000 grade Federal standard 209E. In such a case, there is no point of having a static pressure box in the ceiling. This means that you can use the air duct connections to complete the setup.

The length of the air duct can vary from one system to another. It will depend on the user needs for setting up the fan filter unit in the first place.

–       The Motor

The motor can either be AC or DC. The DC motors are larger in size and can be costly to implement. However, these motors are easy to control. As for the AC motors, they are cheaper, smaller, and their energy consumption is lower. Well, they still need a control setup that corresponds to the fan filter unit technology, which can be hard or easy to implement depending on the application.

As for the service life, the fan filter unit motors’ lifespan can range from 40,000 to 100,000 hours. With the latest construction technology, you can get such motors being oil-free lubrication, having sealed bearings, overheat protection, and a better commutator lifespan.

–       The Impeller

Looking at the impellers, you can either have a forward tilt or backward tilt impeller setup in your fan filter unit. The forward tilt impeller is good for increasing the sagittal flow of the air in the system. As a result, it will improve the ability of removing the dust from a clean room or where it is set up.

The backward tilt on the other hand is good for reducing the energy consumption of the system and keeping the noise levels to a minimum.

–       The Airflow Equalization Device

Just as the name suggests, the airflow equalization device helps the fan filter unit to adjust the airflow at the outlet to match your needs. As a result, you will notice that there is a better airflow distribution in the room where the unit is set up.

The airflow equalization devices are divided into various categories depending on the user needs. You can always inquire more about them from the manufacturer to understand which type will be good for you to use.

–       The High-Efficiency Filter

We could not forget to mention the high-efficiency filter. This is the same filter you can get in a clean factory and other similar applications. The filter is responsible for keeping the air as clean as possible by removing even the finest particles to leave you with better air quality.

–       Metal Protective Net

These are anti-static nets used to protect the unit’s filter from damage when handling it.

–       Blade Edge

There are times when the fan filter unit might be used in special occasions. As such, the blade edge can be sealed with liquid tanks to meet the high sealing performance that the fan filter unit needs to operate correctly.

–       Control Unit

The control unit is important for you to operate the fan filter unit. It is from the control unit that you can choose the correct settings for your applications. This will vary depending on what you hope to achieve with the system. Zonsteel provides you with a clear manual on how to operate the control unit making sure that the fan filter unit works great.

What Is the Working Principle of the Fan Filter Unit?

Ducted Fan Filter Unit

Figure 6: Ducted Fan Filter Unit

The fan filter unit might seem complex at first, however, the working principle is quite easy to understand.

First, the fan set up in the box will draw air into the static pressure box through the air inlet hood. After this, the air gets filtered through the high-efficiency filter and then we end up with clean air. The fan filter unit will now evenly blow this clean air into the area that is be purified. This is done at a constant air flow to keep the performance consistent. You will now end up with a highly clean working environment.

What Are the Tips for Choosing a Fan Filter Unit Fan?

Fan Filter Unit Price

Figure 9: Fan Filter Unit Price

We have already indicated that the fan filter unit needs a fan as part of its components, however, not many would know how to properly size the fan filter unit. So, below are some of the considerations you might want to keep in mind while choosing the fan filter unit fan.

–       AC fan FFU is controlled by a manual governor, because its early investment is relatively small. It is commonly used in clean rooms below 200 FFU.

–        As for the DC fan, it will be great for clean factories that might need to set up many fan filter units. The DC fan will have a computer software that helps with controlling and monitoring it. It is also from the software that you learn more about its faults and status. When you compare to the AC fan, the DC fan can save you a lot more energy, which is sometimes up to 30%.

The DC fan is also preferred as it makes less noise. For a clean room, most people would do anything to have a low noise fan set up in it.

How Is a Fan Filter Unit Controlled?

Fan Filter Unit Control

Figure 10: Fan Filter Unit Control

To control the fan filter unit, there is a control system that is set up at a central location. This controller has the job of monitoring each of the fan filter unit in the system and provide feedback to the user. Some of the things it will monitor include the start and stop time, the speed, status, and any faults that might arise.

Most of the time, the interface is easy to operate even for newbies to the system.

What Are the Tips to Keep in Mind When Using a Fan Filter Unit?

Fan Filter Unit Use

Figure 11: Fan Filter Unit Use

A fan filter unit can be a great investment if you use it correctly. We have come up with a few tips that you should keep in mind when using such systems below. Let us check them out;

–         You should turn on the machine at least 25 minutes before each use if you want to maintain the cleanliness of the clean room. 25 minutes is enough to prep the room and recirculate clean air into the room for you to enjoy.

–         When the machine is in use, you should not touch the filter element of the high-efficiency filter. This can easily lead to damaging the filter paper and affect the purification process. Try to maintain a clean filter element all the time.

–         Just know that it is possible to adjust the speed of the fan filter unit. You can do so by changing the speed from the computer monitor. Each time you are running the system, it is recommended that you use the low gear most of the time. Whenever you find that the speed of the gear is not enough based on your demand, then you can always engage the high gear.

–         We also recommend that you do not switch off the fan filter unit frequently. You should only do so when it is necessary or during maintenance. The idea is to keep the system working efficiently all the time without having to give it enough time to circulate the air in the room before entering.

How Do You Perform Failure Analysis and Troubleshooting for a Fan Filter Unit?

Fan Filter Unit

Figure 12: Fan Filter Unit

There are times you might notice that the fan filter unit is not working as expected. In such a scenario, it is best if you know the fault and how to resolve it. Here are some of the faults you are likely to experience and their solutions.

–       The Air Velocity Seems to Be Too Low for Your Clean Room

The first thing will be to check whether you have the correct power supply. This is in terms of the voltage, current, and frequency.

If the power supply is all good, then you can still increase the speed percentage of the fan filter unit from the computer. It might be because the demand is now higher, so you need to adjust the performance of the system too. With the increase in the speed percentage, you can expect to experience more air volume from the fan impeller.

If the air flow rate seems to remain low after the above adjustments, then replace the HEPA/ULPA filter.

–       The Air Velocity Is Too High

Sometimes it can be the opposite of what you were experiencing above. When this happens, you need to reduce the fan filter unit speed percentage from the control. This will reduce the output air volume from the system’s impeller.

–       The Air Flow Has Too Many Impuritie or It Is Non-Laminar

This is a common problem when there are large obstacles blocking the air flow upstream in the channels. Make sure that such obstacles are eliminated.

Check to see if there is another air flow equipment in the same clean room. This is because it can affect the normal air flow from the fan filter unit.

Look at the airflow speed and adjust correctly. If it is too low, then increase the speed percentage and vice versa.

How Can You Repair and Maintain a Fan Filter Unit?

Fan Filter Unit Repair

Figure 13: Fan Filter Unit Repair

We recommend that you consider the following repair and maintenance tips to keep your fan filter unit in pristine working condition.

–         You should consider using the dust particle counter to better measure the cleanliness of the clean area. What you should be watching out for will be the level of cleanliness. If the level is lower than what you require for the room, then check the high-efficiency filter. For a failed high-efficiency filter, you should change the filter to make the system work better.

–         If you are going to replace the high-efficiency filter, make sure that the fan filter unit is shut down. This will make it safer for you to set up the filter without much of a problem.

–         To replace the high-efficiency filter, consider doing the following;

1,     Take care when changing the filter, especially when handling the filter. The same applies to when unpacking or installing. You should never touch the filter paper by hand.

2,     Before the installation, visually inspect the filter in bright light to see if the filter is still in good condition. Sometimes you can end up with a broken filter during the transportation process. If the air filter is leaking, then it can not be put into use.

3,     If you are going to replace the filter, first disconnect the power supply first. Remove the cabinet cover that is covering the high-efficiency filter to reach the old filter. Once the old filter is removed, replace a new high-efficiency filter in its place. Make sure to reinstall the cabinet cover as it was setup before.

4,      Once the replacement filter is setup, you should use a dust particle counter to check for leaks. You should consider scanning around the frame too looking for leaks. In any case there are leaks, use sealing materials or sealants to block them.

What Are the Tips for Transporting and Storing a Fan Filter Unit?

Fan Filter Unit Right Storage

Figure 14: Fan Filter Unit Right Storage

Transporting your fan filter unit is important if you want it to still be functional at the destination. The fan filter unit needs to be packed correctly just as it would be from the factory. The system and its high efficiency filter need to be set up differently. If you have a well-packaged system, then it should be easy to transport it over a long distance without worrying too much.

What about storage? That is another concern some people might have in their mind. Well, you should store the fan filter unit in a warehouse with temperatures from -10℃~+40℃ and a relative humidity that is not more than 80%. You should also keep the room free of corrosive gases such as bases and acids. As for the storage period, it should not exceed 180 days with the unit still in the packaged state.

Fan Filter Unit VS Fan Clean System. How Is the Fan Filter Unit Better?

Fan Filter Unit Advantage

Figure 15: Fan Filter Unit Advantage

The fan filter unit and fan clean systems are commonly used in the purification of clean rooms. However, there are some subtle differences between these two methods. So, why would you choose a fan filter unit over a fan clean system? Here are some advantages of the fan filter unit over the fan clean system.

–       Fan Filter Unit Create Flow Air

The fan filter unit has the laminar flow can achieve clean room cleanliness 100 grade. While fan clean system can not create good flow air and reach 100 grade due to there is a distance between fan and air filter.

–       Fan Filter Unit Offer More Fan for Clean Room

Another issue with the fan clean system is that when one fan fails, then the whole system fails. This is because it only comes with one fan. If you look at a fan filter unit, when you have how many FFUs you will have how many fans. It will then be easier to have it running easily even when one fan fails.

–       Fan Filter Unit Has Longer Lift Span

The service life of the high-efficiency filter of the fan filter unit is better compared to a fan clean system. This is because you need to install the filter using a pressure block in the case of a fan clean system. This can sometimes not work correctly when there is an unstable air flow in the system. As a result, you are likely to see a system whose air flow filter tends to fail faster.

–       Fan Filter Unit Has Better Sealing

The fan filter unit sealing is also better. This means that you never have to worry so much about the leaks. Because of the common complaints about the fan clean system leaking, many people shy away from it. Whenever a leakage occurs, then you are likely to face issues of keeping the clean room in its best condition as you would want.

–       Fan Filter Units Has Less Noise

The noise of system operation can be a big reason whether you choose or not choose a system. For a fan filter unit, we find that it produces less noise compared to the fan clean system. It is easy to see that many people will go for the fan filter unit for various applications.

What are the advantages of a fan filter unit in an electronic factory?

Fan Filter Unit Advantage in Electronic Factory

Figure 16: Fan Filter Unit Advantage in Electronic Factory

If you are looking to install a fan filter unit in an electronics factory, at first you might not be sure if it is a good idea. Here are some of the reasons you should consider setting up the system.

✦  FFU Is Highly Flexible

The system is highly flexible. This is because the fan filter unit runs on its own power so it is not restricted to cleaning a specific area. You can also adjust its airflow depending on the room size and any other needs.

✦  FFU Shorten Clean Room Installation Time

The fan filter unit also shortens the construction period a factory needs to set up a purification system. A fan filter unit has less air ducts that you need to run so it saves you on the cost and the overall time frame. It should take a few days to set it up.

✦  FFU Can R>educe Operating Costs

Looking at the operating costs, we find that the fan filter unit will be cheaper to operate than other systems. Yes, it might have a high initial cost, but it becomes cheaper as you continue running it over time.

What Is the Installation Process of Fan Filter Units at a Construction Site?

Fan Filter Unit Installation

Figure 17: Fan Filter Unit Installation

To install a fan filter unit at a construction site, you have to approach the process in two parts. First, you need to set up the high-efficiency filters and second, install the fan filter unit.

✦  Before you can start the installation, make sure that the clean room is adequately cleaned. There are times when dust can easily accumulate inside the air conditioning system. So, depending on where you choose to set up the filter, ensure that it is thoroughly cleaned.

✦  At this point, you need to shutdown the clean room first. This is because you might have to do a trial run of the system just to make sure it is working correctly. With the various surfaces cleaned, set up the high efficiency filter immediately.

✦  As for those who will install the filter, they need to take precautions so that they do not end up damaging it. All the precautions are mentioned in this guide and also the product manual.

For a detailed installation process, follow the steps outlined in the product manual that comes with the high-efficiency filter. There might be slight differences from one unit to another, but the installation process is relatively the same. So long as you take care not to damage the HEPA filter, you should be fine.

What Are the Precautions of Unloading and Handling of the Fan Filter Unit and a High-Efficiency Filter?

✦  The fan filter unit are packed with multiple protections before transportation. So, it should be possible to use a forklift to unload the entire pallet. Be careful not to tip over the unit as it can easily get damaged.

✦  Once the FFU is unloaded, place it in a dry and well-ventilated indoor storage room. If you must store it outdoors, then cover the whole package with tarpaulin to avoid exposure to rain and water.

✦  Another precaution to keep in mind is that the high efficiency filter uses ultra-fine glass fiber material. This fiber material can easily break or get damaged when handling the package. So, you need to place the package on the ground gently to avoid collisions and vibrations that can damage the filter.

✦  When opening the package holding the filter, do not use a knife or a sharp object as it might end up scratching the filter paper. Just be gentle with the whole unwrapping experience.

✦  To make it easier to handle the high efficiency filter, we recommend that two people get involved in unloading the filter. Always hold the filter frame with both hands as shown in the image below. And hands with glove.

Figure 18 Figure Right Move Fan Filter Unit

✦  If you have to stack several high-efficiency filters, make sure that they are mostly set up against the wall as shown below.

Figure 19: Figure Right Stack Air Filter

What Are the Precautions to Keep in Mind When Installing a High-Efficiency Filter?

We have talked about the precautions to take while unloading and storing, now we want to see the precautions when doing an installation.

The first and most important precaution to take is inspect the filter to see if it is still in the right condition. This includes inspecting the filter paper, sealing gasket, frame, and its overall look.

During the installation process, you only need to hold the frame. This is to prevent holding the filter element which sometimes can easily be damaged. Always keep your hands on the frame.

Always pay attention to the direction as indicated by the manufacturer while performing the installation. You will see an arrow on the filter. Keep the arrow of the outer frame in line with the air flow to ensure consistent performance.

Do not step on the filter protection during installation. This is because you will end up leaving forbidden debris behind.

Another important precaution is to always protect yourself during the installation process. This will involve using the gloves and watching out for your fingers not to get hurt.

If you follow the precautions mentioned above, then the installation process should be smooth.

What Can Make a Fan Filter Unit Not to Be Used Widely over Long Periods?

Fan Filter Unit Details

Figure 20: Fan Filter Unit Details

One of the reasons that some clients pointed out was the noise problem. This is because of the multiple fans that are used in the system. As much as the noise from fan filter unit fans is not too much, it can often affect some people and thus the reason they do not use them.

Creating a perfectly balanced pressure can also be an issue for some rooms. There is no guarantee that the various fans set up in different corners can create the balanced pressure that the users want.

There are also a few maintenance issues that arise when using a fan filter unit. Considering that the initial cost of the system is also high, some people will feel the maintenance might also be the same. Some also have issues with the motor life of a system. Such an issue can easily drive someone away from using a fan filter unit.

Nevertheless, these problems can be resolved thanks to the new technologies in place. We find that the noise can be reduced depending on the air duct design. Also, the development of the computer-based control systems help to eliminate the pressure imbalance in the large fan filter unit setups.

The production technology has also prolonged the motor service life. You can now get a unit that lasts for over 50,000 hours with little to no maintenance. Those who might have been worried about maintenance should find the system ideal.

What Is the MAU+FFU+DC System? And Where Is Such a System Mainly Used?

The MAU+FFU+DC system is an important purification system commonly found in the electronics industry. Its work is to combine the three systems into one for the best efficiency. You are now likely to find the clean room having a better cleanliness level compared to using only one system.

The MAU or Make Air Unit is responsible for controlling the indoor humidity. This ensures that there is always positive pressure in the room. Its performance depends on the components used to set it up. You can find most having components such as a hot coil, cold coil, humidifier, high efficiency filtration, and more. Always contact the manufacturer to understand more about the components of the MAU system.

As for the Fan Filter Unit (FFU), it will ensure there is better cleanliness in this kind of set up. The quality of the fan and the HEPA or ULPA filters will determine how good the system is at its job. Always go for a unit that gives you more performance for the money.

The DC or dry coil system is responsible for removing the indoor heat and the humidity in an aim to maintain the indoor temperature within the desired range.

Once this whole system is setup correctly, be ready to experience a better performance that you will always love in terms of keeping the room clean.

What Are the Benefits of a Dry-Coil Fan Filter Unit System over Other Methods?

Here are some of the advantages of the dry-coil fan filter unit over the other different methods.

✦   The system has better flexibility and can cover a larger area with ease. There is no doubt that the flexibility of a clean air-conditioning system is good. With this one, you can adjust it to meet your needs thanks to the great flexibility.

✦    The dry coil system offers a better seal between the upper ceiling and the negative pressure of the fan filter unit. This means that you have better cleanliness in the clean room.

✦     The dry coil fan filter unit has less resistance to the air flow. This means that you can have a unit that remains highly efficient.

✦     Being highly efficient also means that the unit uses less power. You can be running it in your clean room for weeks without worrying much about its energy use. Also, it allows you to change the various settings to tailor it to your energy needs.
